Description: Vundo is a trojan desktop hijacker trojan that displays pop-up advertisements which promote many rogue computer-enhancement programs such as PC-Antispyware, PC-Cleaner, Error Cleaner, System Defender Security System, Brave Sentry, VirusRescue, DriveCleaner, ErrorSafe, WinAntiVirus Pro, Error Protector, Ultimate Defender, Error Safe, System Doctor, WinDoctor, VirusBurst, VirusBlast, SysProtect, SpyAxe, WebSecureDisc, WinFixer, WinAntiSpyware, SpySheriff, UnSpyPC, AntiVirusGold, SpyTrooper and WinHound. Vundo Trojan also hijacks user's homepage to one of many websites such as WinAntiVirus.com, TheTrafficMasters.com, MySafeTrip.com, PCSecurityShield.com, SpyWareRemover.com, DriveCleaner.com, Cyber-Defender.com, helper-security.com, sgviralscan.com, websafetyguide.com, antivirus-proscan.com and scan.freescannerantispyware.com. Vundo Trojan may degrade system performance, run unauthorized processes and download files from the Internet without user's consent. The Vundo Trojan installs a dll component that seems to harvest information from the infected computer, then uploads this information to various servers.

Vundo Trojan hijacks user's desktop and replaces it with a warning message similar to the one shown below:

Adware - Adware is a software application which displays advertisements on your computer. Advertisements can be displayed through pop-up / pop-under windows, additional bars or toolbars, underlined links or buttons that appear on a computer screen. Adware applications include additional code that delivers the ads. Adware authors earn money when users click on those ads. Occasionally, adware includes code that tracks user's site visits and passes it to third parties without the user's permission or knowledge.

BHO - A Browser Helper Object (BHO) is a software application that runs automatically whenever you start Internet Explorer. Browser Helper Objects are typically installed by other programs such as toolbar accessories and can track internet usage, create popup windows, display additional information on a viewed page and collect information that is transmitted by you over the internet. Malicious software that exploits this technology can replace banner advertisements with other ads, monitor your actions, change your home page, etc.

Backdoor - A Backdoor is an undocumented or secret means that can be used to obtain unauthorized access to your computer, or a malicious program that uses such a means to penetrate a computer system. Backdoor applications exploit vulnerabilities of installed programs or operating system and allow attackers to gain control over your computer system. Backdoor works in the background and hides from the user. It is always a high security risk.

Downloader - A Downloader is a software application or part of the program which is designed to retrieve (download) and install additional files from the Internet. Malware programs often include Downloaders which allow the Malware to continually update themselves, thereby eluding detection.

Trojan - A Trojans or Trojan Horse is any programs that installs itself secretly, quite often with sinister intent. Once installed, the trojan author (hacker) can gain complete control of the infected PC. Trojans are usually designed to steal sensitive information and/or destroy the system. Trojans can be distributed as unsolicited email attachments, or bundled with freeware and shareware programs.

Worm - A Worm is a virus-like software application which spreads itself to other computers. Worms send themselves out to email addresses collected from the infected PC. Worms are known to mutate and they usually carry a destructive payload.

Popup advertisements are displayed and / or homepage becomes hijacked (WinAntiVirus.com, SpyWareRemover.com, TheTrafficMasters.com, MySafeTrip.com, PCSecurityShield.com, DriveCleaner.com, Cyber-Defender.com, helper-security.com, sgviralscan.com, websafetyguide.com, antivirus-proscan.com and scan.freescannerantispyware.com).

Rogue anti-spyware programs are downloaded and installed without user's concent or knowledge.

A variant of Vundo installs a file named 'msasvc.exe' in the System folder.

Desktop can be changed and can show the message "Your computer is in Danger!" or "Warning: Spyware threat has been detected on your PC!"
